How to book a slot

Booking is done online through the West Sussex County Council website. Pick the Worthing site, choose a date and time, and enter your vehicle registration. Have your registration ready, as it is checked when you arrive.

Slots at busy times, such as weekends and bank holidays, can go quickly. If you have a lot to get rid of, book early or think about whether one skip would save you several trips.

Which vehicles are allowed

Cars and most small vans can use the site. The council does not allow Luton-type vans, horseboxes, twin-axle trailers, trucks with tippers, flatbeds or drop-sides, or any vehicle over 3.5 tonnes gross weight.

If you borrow or hire a vehicle for a big clear-out, check it is allowed before you load it.

What to check before you go

  • Look up your items in the council A to Z of recycling, as some materials are restricted or charged, especially DIY waste such as rubble, soil and plasterboard.
  • Sort your waste at home, so you can unload quickly into the right containers.
  • The site is for household waste only. Trade waste is not accepted.
  • Asbestos needs special handling, so check the council rules before you take any.

When a skip or collection is easier than the tip

The tip is great for a few bags or a car boot of recycling. It gets harder when the job is bigger, heavier or awkward to move.

  • Big clear-outs. A whole room, a loft or a garage can mean several booked slots and trips. One skip on the drive takes it all, and mattresses go in at no extra charge.
  • Heavy building waste. Rubble and soil are heavy and may be restricted at the tip. A 2 or 4-yard skip takes them in one go.
  • No car or van? If you do not have a car or van, or yours is not allowed on site, our rubbish removal team loads everything for you.
  • Sofas and bulky furniture. Awkward to fit in a car, and sofas have to be handled separately. Book a sofa collection instead.

Common questions

Do I need to book the Worthing tip?

Yes, if you are arriving in a vehicle. West Sussex County Council asks you to book a time slot online before you visit. You do not need to book if you arrive on foot, by bike or on a mobility scooter.

What are the Worthing tip opening times?

From 1 October to 31 March the site is open 9am to 4pm and closed on Thursdays. From 1 April to 30 September it stays open until 6pm. Check the council website before you go, as times can change.

Where is the Worthing tip?

Worthing Recycling Centre is on the Hambridge Trading Estate, Willowbrook Road, Worthing, BN14 8NA.

Can I take a van or trailer to the Worthing tip?

Some vehicles are not allowed, including Luton-type vans, twin-axle trailers, tippers, flatbeds, drop-sides and vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. Check the council rules before you load up.

Is it cheaper to hire a skip than go to the tip?

For a few bags, the tip is cheaper. For a full room, a garden clear-out or building waste, a skip usually works out better once you count the booked slots, the trips and the time. A 2-yard skip from D J Recycling starts at £100 + VAT for hardcore and £125 + VAT for mixed waste.

Can a business use the Worthing tip?

No. Recycling centres are for household waste. Businesses need a licensed waste carrier, such as a skip or waste collection company.
