2-yard or 4-yard: which mini skip do you need?
Think about the type of waste first, then the amount.
Pick the 2-yard for small but heavy jobs. A bathroom strip-out, a few slabs from the patio, a border you are digging out, or the rubble from opening up a fireplace. It holds 20 to 25 bin bags and fits on the shortest drives.
Pick the 4-yard for anything bulky. A kitchen refit, a garage clear-out, old furniture or a bigger garden job. It holds 35 to 45 bags and is the size we deliver most.
If you are torn between the two, go bigger for light, bulky waste and smaller for heavy material. A 4-yard full of soil gets close to what the lorry can safely lift, so we keep heavy loads level with the top. Full details are on the 2-yard skip and 4-yard skip pages.
The cheapest way to hire a mini skip
The lowest price we do is a 2-yard skip with clean hardcore only, at £100 + VAT. Brick, concrete and rubble get crushed and reused, so they cost less to tip than mixed rubbish.
That only works if the load is clean. Once soil, wood, plastic or bags go in, it becomes mixed waste and is charged at £125 for a 2-yard. Soil itself is always charged at the mixed price.
Green waste in a 4-yard is £150 + VAT, which is cheaper than mixed. Keep garden waste separate from other rubbish and you will pay less.
Where a mini skip can go
Most people have their mini skip on the drive. That is the easiest option and needs no paperwork. A 2-yard fits on short drives and some front gardens, which is why it is popular with terraced houses.
If it has to go on the road, it needs a licence from the council and lights at night. We apply for you. In most of our area that is West Sussex County Council, and in Portslade it is Brighton & Hove City Council. Allow at least ten working days.
If even a 2-yard will not fit, a skip bag can be placed by hand on a path or small forecourt.
What can go in a mini skip?
Household rubbish, garden waste, wood, rubble, soil, old furniture and mattresses are all fine. Keep out electrical items, batteries, gas bottles, paint, chemicals, tyres and asbestos. Plasterboard has to be kept apart from other waste, and sofas need mentioning first because of the rules on upholstered seating.

Mini skip hire questions
What size is a mini skip?
A mini skip is a 2-yard or 4-yard skip. The 2-yard holds roughly 20 to 25 bin bags and the 4-yard roughly 35 to 45.
How much is mini skip hire in Worthing?
A 2-yard mini skip is £100 + VAT for clean hardcore or £125 + VAT for mixed waste. A 4-yard is £130 for hardcore, £150 for green waste or £220 for mixed waste, all + VAT with seven days included.
What is the cheapest skip you do?
The 2-yard skip filled with clean hardcore only, at £100 + VAT. Brick, concrete and rubble cost less to tip because they are recycled.
Can a mini skip take soil?
Yes. Our 2 and 4-yard skips are the only sizes that take soil and rubble. Soil is charged at the mixed waste price.
Do I need a permit for a mini skip?
Not if it goes on your drive or other private land. On the road it needs a council licence, which we arrange. Allow at least ten working days.
Can I put a mattress in a mini skip?
Yes, at no extra charge. A mattress does take up a lot of room in a 2-yard, so a 4-yard is usually the better pick if one is going in.
